Vase Crowther and Brayley - Auctioneers and Appraisers statue

SAILOR WORK ITEMS

Whether it be a colorful ditty box, a whale bone cane with an ivory handle or a tremendous piece of scrimshaw, sailors shipping out of east coast ports in the 19th century crafted many fascinating items during their long sea voyages.

They used whatever materials were to hand to fashion these objects which reflected the romance of the sea and their adventures. The scrimshanded 9" tooth c 1850 with its whaling scene is perhaps the best piece of scrimshaw to be offered at auction in Nova Scotia.
